STATEMENT REGARDING DEFAMINATION SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS

As the former Chief of the largest First Nation in Manitoba, Peguis First Nation, I wish to address the impact of defamation of character and malicious Facebook posts have on myself and my family. While such actions often carry legal consequences in many societies, I have chosen patience and resilience instead of legal action against such individuals to uphold our community values.

Over my 14 years of service as Chief, I have dedicated myself to the well-being of our people and community. Unfortunately, my commitment to fairness through serving people, sometimes leads to disappointment and sarcasm among those who may not understand my refusal to engage in illegal or unfair communication practices. The slander directed at me undermines not only my integrity but also our community’s unity in moving things forward.

As First Nations people, we must uphold ourselves to a higher standard and reject lateral violence. We need to foster a culture of healing and support for each other, where grievances can be addressed respectfully and directly. Together, let us prioritize healing and mutual respect by uplifting one another during difficult times.

I will continue my journey in helping our people and communities, while working toward solutions in partnerships with our First Nations, Federal and Provincial counterparts at the various levels and tables. Thank you for your understanding and support.
